FAQ:

When did the Sober & Lonely Institute form?

1 April 2011

Where is the Sober & Lonely Institute based?

S&L has been a mobile platform since 2011. We organised projects and exhibitions at friendly institutions and art spaces in Johannesburg, Durban, Los Angeles, Finland and the Netherlands, and hosted artists in residence at a big old house in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. In 2013 we purchased a 1968 model fold-up caravan to legitimise calling ourselves a mobile platform. As of 2014 the Institute is based at 66 4th Avenue in Melville (the caravan is parked there too!), a suburb just west of the Johannesburg CBD. Even though we (temporarily) have a more architecturally sound home base, we are still curious and view the Institute as malleable.

What happens at the Sober & Lonely Institute?

Teleportation and telepathic experiments, and future studies, form a large part of what happens at S&L. Public talks, screenings, interventions, physical exertion, exhibitions and publications are some of the modes of expression that drive these experiments and research. We're always looking for artists, motivational speakers, writers, musicians, obsessives, pets, and psychics to join us in producing new and relevant content.

Who can participate in activities at the Sober & Lonely Institute?

You can, and so can your grandmother, and your kids, and your dog, and your weird neighbour, as long as you all arrive with an open mind.

When can I visit the Sober & Lonely Institute?

Sign up to our mailing list or like us on Facebook to find out about public openings and events. Activities at S&L do not run on a rigid schedule, but are rather spontaneous in nature most of the time. If you just want to visit us at the space, drop us an email to make an appointment, or if the door is open when you're drive past, ring the bell.

How can I be part of the Sober & Lonely Institute?

Go to our Residencies tab to find out how to apply to do projects or live at the house or in the caravan for a while. If you have any other things you think we might be interested in, write to us about them via email.

And?

We're working on two surprises for you, that involve miniature things, and things you can take home.
