SOBER & LONELY PROJECTS & SUBURBAN RESIDENCIES v2.0:
Location: Melville, Johannesburg, South Africa
Deadline: Ongoing
Duration: 1 day - 1 month
Costs & Support: Artists will need to cover all transport, insurance, subsistence, and material costs. Sober & Lonely will provide a modest event budget. Artists might be expected to contribute to the running of the household, depending on the duration of their stay.
1) 2014 HOUSE RESIDENCY (INCLUDING BUNK BEDS):
Artists, curators, writers, musicians, scientists, obsessives, and other interested parties working in line with Sober & Lonely's field of interest (see our Projects page for clues) are invited to submit a proposal to produce a project, work and/or live in the residency space for a day up to a month. The residency is furnished with bunk beds (for two), desks, and a small museum. There is a kitchen and bathroom, a study/studio space, a common room, and a small garden. The residency is situated in Melville, a suburb just west of the city centre. There is access to good public transport, and it is walking distance from many shops, restaurants, and bars. The space is ideal for research-based and intimate work as opposed to larger workshop-based methods of art making. A public engagement such as a lecture, screening, dinner, experiment, or dialogue, is encouraged during or at the end of the project/residency period.
Please fill in this application form and send it back to us if you're interested in applying.
2) 1968 BRANFOLD CARAVAN RESIDENCY:
The caravan lives in the back yard of the main residency space in Melville, Johannesburg. It was almost made into a boerewors roll restaurant before we bought it from a nice man in Krugersdorp in 2013. Since then it has spent time at the Caravan Academy and later at GoetheOnMain, where it was transformed into a Teleportation Device. We're currently looking for new projects to inhabit the caravan. If you would like to live in it for a short period of time, make something in or around it, host a talk in it, write a book in it, make art in it, fill it with puppies, refurbish it, or something else, then download this application form and send it back to us. We'll review the applications bimonthly and get back to you.
